How to replace a stretch ceiling

Jul 30, 2024 | Benefits, Designs, Maintenance

One of the USPs of stretch ceilings is that they are very easy to replace.

But they are also very strong, easy to clean and long-lasting. Easy Ceiling’s stretch ceilings come with a 10 year guarantee but they can often last much longer.

So why would you need to replace your stretch ceiling?

Possibly your ceiling might have been damaged, sometimes this can happen when a room is being redecorated. But most likely you might just fancy a change? Stretch ceilings come in a variety of colours and styles and with an increasingly exciting range of lighting options, so why not?

So how do you replace it then?

Here’s our Easy Ceiling 7 step guide.

1. Choose your new ceiling design

We’re going for a quick replacement here so let’s ignore changing the ceiling to a multi-level design or changing the lighting options significantly. You will need to decide on a colour and finish. You might even want to go for a printed ceiling, like this sky, tree top and bird one, this time?

2. Prepare your room

Actually, forget this one. For preparing the room to take down the old ceiling and install the new one you probably don’t have to do anything at all. Completely different to if you were having to replaster and paint the ceiling again!

3. Detach fixtures and fittings

You are likely to have lights and other fittings attached to the ceiling. They will need to be detached and positioned above the existing ceiling so it is easy to take it down.

4. Take down and recycle your existing stretch ceiling

To take down your existing ceiling, cut around the perimeter of the canvas leaving up to 10 cm in place so you can easily remove the harpoon which connects the canvas to the aluminium track around your room. At this point you can repair any issues with the original ceiling, utilities or fittings if required. Once you have got it down, unlike most other ceiling materials, stretch ceilings are 100% recyclable. There are dedicated PVC recycling centres located across the UK.

5. Install your new ceiling

Heat the room up to 40-50 degrees and attach your new canvas to the aluminium track.

6. Reattach fixtures and fittings

Then add glue strengthening rings to secure the area around the canvas where the fixtures and fittings are pulled through.

7. Final cleaning and done!

Remove any handprints or marks on the ceiling with a damp cloth. And you’re finished!
